Game server crashes

Note: The content on this page pertains to Managed Game Server Hosting (Clanforge). If you’re using Game Server Hosting (Multiplay), refer to the Game Server Hosting (Multiplay) documentation.

Game servers sometimes crash, which immediately ends any active game sessions on that game server. When Game Server Hosting detects that a game server is no longer responding to queries, Game Server Hosting restarts the game server process, unless the server has an active allocation, in which case Game Server Hosting stops the game server process, and it can be restarted with a new allocation.

If the problem isn’t resolved, the game server will continue to crash. The following list details of some common reasons why a game server might crash.

  • There’s something wrong with the game binary.
  • The game server is using too many resources for the number of players.
  • There’s something wrong with the game server configuration.
  • The game image that the process is looking for doesn’t exist or doesn’t have the correct permissions.
  • The game process isn’t responding to queries, which triggered Game Server Hosting to restart the process.

Usually, if a game server is crashing and you are certain that it isn't a bug in the game binary code, then you should typically reach out to the customer success team. There are some other resources that are also available for troubleshooting purposes:

  • Game Server Hosting logs
  • Any exposed game server logs (custom files or directories that Game Server Hosting exposes from your game server directories)
  • The game server page on Game Server Hosting, which has information about the status of the game server, resource consumption, and configuration information.
