Introduction to User Generated Content (UGC)

Attention: The Digital Services Act (DSA) requires Unity to notify our customers’ end users if Unity takes an action which impacts those end users under the DSA. To comply with this requirement, if you use Unity Gaming Services (UGS) products that rely on the Unity Authentication Service, you must integrate the notification API by the effective date of the DSA: February 17, 2024. The notification API is ready for adoption in late January 2024.

For more information on DSA, refer to the Digital Services Act - compliance update.

User Generated Content is a Unity Gaming Services (UGS) feature that provides an end-to-end solution for creating and managing content, including publishing, storing, curating, moderating, and distributing. UGC in games has the potential to encompass nearly anything, given the broad range of creative possibilities available to players. The solution is format agnostic; this means anything from JPEGs to asset bundles are considered UGC.

There are multiple ways for creators to create and upload content. The first is to create an in-game creation tool such as a character creator or a room builder. Another way is to use UGC Bridge which allows your creators to use the Unity Editor to create content and upload it directly to your game all within the editor.

Moderation tools help review reported content. Game studios can moderate themselves or crowdsource as needed. Use automated and manual tags to promote the most engaging content to your players for advanced content discovery.

Use moderation tools to set specific rules and provide with you the means to review and curate any content that is uploaded. You can also distribute moderation permissions to staff or community members to help review content efficiently.

To help with content discovery, filter content based on what is most engaging, trending, popular, and new.

The optional creator center is branded to your game web portal for your creators to manage, review the performance, and edit metadata of all their content.

The creator workflow is:

  1. Creators build user-generated content for your game.
  2. Players search, rate, moderate, and engage with this content.
  3. This creates an in-game content flywheel of engagement, fuelled by your most invested creators.
  4. Content quality improves over time through advanced moderation.

The Unity Cloud Dashboard is a user interface where you can set up and adjust any settings related to Unity UGC.
