HoloLens gestures

HoloLens gestures are hand motions that activate certain commands on the HoloLens. These gestures work with any application on the HoloLens.

Note: Gestures can be done with your right or left hand. Make sure that your hands are in view of the cameras.

Note: All gestures and voice commands used for Hololens 1, also work in Hololens 2 and not vice versa.

Airtap

Since the HoloLens does not have a mouse or a physical screen like an iPad, airtap allows you to select items on your screen. Airtap using your thumb and index finger. Pinch the option or menu you want to select. You can also use airtap to drag a menu.

Select

You can use your index finger to tap on a button.

**Note: **This gesture is available only in HoloLens 2.

Open or Move main menu

HoloLens 1

To open the main menu, airtap the menu icon. You can also use a voice command to open the main menu. To use voice commands, see Hololens voice commands.

HoloLens 2

To open the main menu, raise your wrist towards the cameras. The Microsoft start menu icon and the HoloLive menu icon appear. Use your other hand to select the icon for the menu you want to open.

Hand ray

Hand ray helps you to interact with targets (menus or buttons) that are out of reach. To use a hand ray, hold your hand in front of you, with your palm facing away. A hand ray (dotted line) appears. If you hold up both of your hands, two rays appear on the screen. This allows the HoloLens 2 to be used with your right or left hand.

If you're far away from your target, the ray helps you select or airtap the target. The hand ray disappears whenever your hand gets close to a target.
