# Managing licenses

> Use Unity Hub to activate, view, and return Unity licenses for various plans.

You can use the Unity Hub to view, add, and return licenses. To access the license management options:

1. Open the Unity Hub, and sign in.
2. Select **Licenses** in the left sidebar.

This view shows your active licenses and displays the type of license, the activation date, and an option to **Return license**. Select **Refresh** to get the most up-to-date licenses that you've activated on your computer.

Use the Hub to activate a Unity license, for the following plans:

* A [Unity Personal](#personal) plan.
* A plan that uses [named user licensing](#nul).
* A plan that uses a [serial key](#serial).

For information about licenses that use Unity’s floating model, refer to [Unity Licensing Server documentation](/licensing-server.md).

## Activate a license for a Unity Personal plan##personal

If you use the Unity Personal plan, sign in to the Unity Hub to automatically activate your license. No further action is required.

To return your Unity Personal license, sign out of the Unity Hub.

### Get a free license for Unity Personal

If you don't already have a license for Unity Personal, or if the Hub didn't activate it when you signed in, follow these steps:

1. In the left sidebar, select **Licenses** > **Add license**.
2. Select **Get a free personal license**.
3. Read the terms.
4. Select **Agree and get personal edition license**.

## Activate a named user license##nul

Before you can activate a [named user license](https://docs.unity3d.com/6000.0/Documentation/Manual/LicenseOverview.html) for a seat-based plan:

* You must be a member of an organization that subscribes to the relevant plan.
* The organization administrator must assign a seat to an organization member by going to [https://id.unity.com](https://id.unity.com) and selecting **Organizations** > (select an organization) > **Subscriptions & Services** > **Manage seats** > **Assign Seat(s)**.

After an administrator assigns your seat, sign in to the Unity Hub to automatically activate your license.

To return your named user license, sign out of the Unity Hub.

For information about checking computers where you've activated a license, refer to [Check which computers have an activated license](#check-license).

## Activate a serial-based license##serial

If you have a [serial-based plan](https://docs.unity3d.com/6000.0/Documentation/Manual/LicenseOverview.html), you can activate it [with a serial key](#serial-key) or by [creating a license request](#license-request).

### Activate with a serial key##serial-key

This is an online activation method. If the computer on which you'll use the Unity Editor isn't connected to the internet, refer to [Activate with a license request](#activate-with-a-license-request).

1. In the left sidebar, select **Licenses** > **Add license**.
2. Select **Activate with a serial number**.
3. Enter the serial key.
4. Select **Activate**.

For information about checking computers where you've activated a license, refer to [Check which computers have an activated license](#check-license).

### Activate with a license request##license-request

Use this method if the computer on which you'll use the Unity Editor isn't connected to the internet. This method assumes you have access to two computers, as follows:

* The first computer is the one on which you'll use the Unity Editor, but the computer can’t connect to the internet.
* The second computer is any computer that can connect to the internet.

From the first computer (on which you'll use the Unity Editor):

1. In the left sidebar, select **Licenses** > **Add license**.
2. Select **Activate with license request**.
3. Select **Create license request** to download an `.alf` request file. You'll need this file in a later step.
4. Transfer the `.alf` file from the previous step to a second computer that has internet access.

From the second computer:

5. Go to the [Upload licence request](https://license.unity3d.com/manual) portal.
6. Select **Browse**.
7. Select the `.alf` license request file you downloaded earlier.
8. Select **Next**, and follow the prompts.
9. Select **Download license file** to download your Unity license file (`.ulf`). You'll need this `.ulf` file in a later step.
10. Transfer the `.ulf` license file from the second computer to the first computer.

From the first computer:

11. Return to the Unity Hub.
12. Select **License file** in the **Activate with license file** step.
13. Locate the Unity license file (`.ulf`) that you transferred earlier.
14. Select **Activate**.

For information about checking computers where you've activated a license, refer to [Check which computers have an activated license](#check-license).

## Check which computers have an activated license##check-license

You can check which computers have an activated license for a paid plan. This process doesn't apply to Unity Personal plans.

To check which computers have an activated license:

1. Go to [https://id.unity.com/en/subscriptions](https://id.unity.com/en/subscriptions).
2. Go to the **Activations** subsection.
3. Check the **Computer Name** column, which lists the host names of the computers where you've activated a license.

## Education licenses
