# Resource Tables window reference > Explore the controls in the Resource Tables window to author keys, translations, variants, and metadata. Explore the controls in the **Resource Tables** window to author keys, translations, variants, and metadata. Open the window with **Window** > **Localization** > **Resource Tables**. The window edits table collections, with one row per key and one column per locale. For the authoring workflows, refer to [Create and edit table collections](/engine/6000.7/manual/localization/translations/create-and-edit-table-collections.md). ## Resource Tables window controls The window contains the following areas and controls. ### Collection list Lists the project's table collections. Select one to edit it. To create a new collection, select **New Collection** and choose where to save it and its per-locale tables. ### Table view Shows the selected collection. Each row is a key, and each column is a locale. Rows show the entry's type, and asset rows show the storage mode for each value (**Direct** or **Resources**). ### Keys Some of these controls are only accessible from the row's actions menu (**⋮**), for example **Smart string** and **Add variant**. | **Control** | **Description** | | ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | **Add Entry** | Creates a key with the name you enter and the type you select, **String**, an asset type, or a **Variant** type with a selector. | | **Rename key** | Renames the key. To rename a key inline, double-click it. Available from the row's actions menu (**⋮**). Renames keep the key's ID, so references keep working. | | **Delete key** | Removes the key and its values from every locale. Available from the row's actions menu (**⋮**). | | **Smart string** | Sets whether the key's values format at runtime as [Smart Strings](/engine/6000.7/manual/scripting/smart-strings.md). Available from the row's actions menu (**⋮**) on string entries. | To reorder keys, click and drag a row. ### Locale columns The **Key** column header has a menu button (**⋮**) that manages the collection's columns: | **Control** | **Description** | | -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | **Add locale** | Opens a submenu of project locales that aren't yet in this collection. Selecting one creates the locale's table for the collection and shows the new column. When every project locale is already in the collection, this submenu is disabled. To add a new locale to the project, refer to [Add locales](/engine/6000.7/manual/get-started.md#add-locales). | | **Columns** | Opens a submenu of the collection's columns. Selecting one toggles its visibility. The submenu includes the ID column. | ### Variants A variant key holds several values chosen at runtime by a selector. For the concept, refer to [Variants](/engine/6000.7/manual/localization/translations/tables.md#variants); for how to create one, refer to [Add variants](/engine/6000.7/manual/localization/translations/create-and-edit-table-collections.md#add-variants). Once a key is a variant key, the row's actions menu (**⋮**) offers the following controls: | **Control** | **Description** | | ------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | **Add variant** | Adds another variant option to the key. Opens a submenu of the selector's available keys. Available on the variant key's row. | | **Remove variant** | Deletes one variant row. Available on each variant row's actions menu (**⋮**). | ### Metadata Metadata attaches at four scopes and opens in one of three popup titles: * The **Metadata** button on a value cell opens the **Metadata** popup, scoped to one entry. * The **Metadata** button on a key cell opens the **Shared metadata** popup, scoped to that key across all locales. * The column header menus (**⋮**) open the collection- or table-scoped popups: | **Menu item** | **Description** | | -------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | **Shared metadata…** | Opens the **Shared metadata** popup for the collection's shared data. Available from the **Key** column header menu. | | **Table metadata…** | Opens the **Table metadata** popup for one locale's table. Available from a locale column header menu. | For the built-in metadata types, refer to [Metadata](/engine/6000.7/manual/localization/translations/tables.md#metadata). ### Import and export The export menu writes the collection to a file, and the import menu reads one back. You can select a file format when you import or export a table collection. The JSON and **Character Set** formats are built-in. The `com.unity.localization` package adds more formats. For each format that supports importing and exporting, the menus offer three items (for example, JSON): * **Export** > **JSON** exports the collection to a file. * **Import** > **JSON** (**Merge**) imports a file and merges it with the collection. * **Import** > **JSON** (**Replace**) imports a file and replaces the collection's entries with it. **Character Set** appears in the export menu only. A locale column's header menu also has **Export Character Set…**, which exports just that locale's table. Free text matches key names and values.
