# rootItem

> The hidden root item of the TreeView (it is never rendered).

## Definition

* **Type:** Property
* **Namespace:** [UnityEditor.IMGUI.Controls](/engine/6000.5/script-reference/unityeditor/imgui/controls.md)
* **Assembly:** UnityEditor.CoreModule

> **Warning:**
>
> **Removed.** TreeView is now deprecated. You can likely now use TreeView\\\<int\\> instead and not think more about it. But if you were using that identifier to store InstanceID data, you should instead opt to upgrade your TreeViews to use TreeView\\\<InstanceID\\> to get the proper typing.

```csharp
protected TreeViewItem rootItem { get; }
```

### Remarks

It has a depth of -1 whereas the rows of the TreeView will have a depth of 0 or higher. The rootItem can be used for traversing the items created in [TreeView.BuildRoot](/engine/6000.5/script-reference/unityeditor/imgui/controls/treeview/buildroot.md) (if a full tree was created).
