Manage access for a user

Choose a set of permissions for each user
Read time 2 minutesLast updated a day ago

You can manage user access at two levels: the organization and the project. Both levels use two types of permission sets:
  • The user type determines the base access level of the user and designates the user as a member of the organization or the project.
  • The roles are fine-grained add-on roles based on role-based access control (RBAC). Unity Dashboard groups RBAC roles into role sets, for example, Asset Manager or Automation.
Note
Only organization owners can manage access at the organization level. Only organization owners and project owners can manage access at the project level.
Note
A new user must sign in to Unity Dashboard first to be listed as an organization member, with the default User user type. Only after this step, administrators can assign additional user types or RBAC roles to that new user.

Manage organization-level access

To change the user type or the user roles of a member at the organization level, complete these steps:
  1. In Unity Dashboard, go to Administration > Members.
  2. Next to the member you want to update, select Manage roles (…).
  3. To change the user type, complete these steps:
    1. Select Edit user type in organization.
    2. Select the user type, that is,
      User
      or
      Owner
      .
    3. Select Save.
    Note
You can't change your own user type.
  4. To change the RBAC roles, complete these steps:
    1. Select Edit roles in organization.
    2. Select the roles that you want to assign, for example, an Asset Manager manager and an Automation role.
    3. To remove all roles for a specific service, expand the list of roles, and then select Clear selection.
    4. Select Save.
    Note
You can't change the user roles of members who have the Owner user type.

Manage project-level access

To change the user type or the user roles of a member at the project level, complete these steps:
  1. In Unity Dashboard, go to Administration > Projects.
  2. Select the project.
  3. On the Members tab, next to the member you want to update, select Manage roles (…).
  4. To change the user type, complete these steps:
    1. Select Edit user type in project.
    2. Select the user type, that is,
      User
      or
      Owner
      .
    3. Select Save.
    Note
You can't change your own user type. You also can't assign a user type that is lower than the one the member inherits from the organization level. For example, you can't assign the User type at the project level to a member who has the Owner type at the organization level.
  5. To change the RBAC roles, complete these steps:
    1. Select Edit roles in project.
    2. Select the roles that you want to assign, for example, an Asset Manager manager and an Automation role.
    3. To remove all roles for a specific service, expand the list of roles, and then select Clear selection.
    4. Select Save.
    Note
You can't change the user roles of members who have the Owner user type.
